Anthony Amado’s Thoughts on Possible U.S Troop Withdrawal

Bergen County, NJ -02/24/2014

The Obama administration announced today that planning has started for the possible withdrawal of all U.S. troops by the end of 2014 if no security agreement can be reached. For U.S. citizens like New Jersey’s Anthony Amado this was welcomed news, if it happens.

There are still more than 33,000 U.S. troops on the ground in Afghanistan. There has been consistent U.S. military presence in the area since the attacks of 2011. The impact on having the troops finally home on American soil would be very exciting for people who have had family and friends serving, like Anthony Amado.

There is a security agreement that has been negotiated between Afghanistan and the U.S. that would cover a continuing mission after 2014, which would be focused on training Afgan forces and counterterrorism. This agreement hasn’t been signed yet however.

Anthony Amado Talks about the Possible Minimum Wage Increase

Bergen County, NJ -02/20/2014

Raising the Federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would mean an increase in wages for 28 million workers in this country. That would mean an improved quality of life. For New Jersey resident Anthony Amado, who has seen what living on a minimum wage income means, through experiences volunteering that seems like a no brainer.

However, critics are arguing that raising the minimum wage could also potentially cause the loss of 500,000 jobs.  Job loss would be imminent due to payroll costs going up for employers. However, that could balance out with less turnover and higher productivity if employees are making more money.

One of the key points made by those in favor of increasing the minimum wage is that the increase would potentially bring 900,000 people currently making $7.25 an hour, out of poverty. Anthony Amado that seems like a good enough reason to certainly increase the minimum wage.

Anthony Amado’s Thoughts on the Southeast Snow Storm

Bergen County, NJ -02/13/2014

Massive amounts of snow and ice are pummeling the east coast once again. The weather isn’t stopping there; parts of the southeast, as far south as Georgia are getting hit as well. While the snow may look pretty, the ice on the other hand is wreaking havoc for many, especially stranded motorists.

For many people the snow and ice are a pain. Federal offices have closed for the day due to the massive storms. But for some people, like New Jersey’s Anthony Amado, the snow is a welcomed. Anthony Amado is an avid snowboarder and would love to have this kind of weather every winter.

While the snow is fun for those that like to enjoy the outdoors, such as Anthony Amado, and those that got the day off from work. But for those stranded because of the ice and snow, or without electricity, the weather is not welcomed.

Anthony Amado Remembers Former Child Star Shirley Temple

Bergen County, NJ -02/12/2014

Another American icon has passed away. Former child star Shirley Temple Black passed away late Monday at the age of 85. Temple is noted as one of the most popular child starts in Hollywood history. Film fan Anthony Amado remembers watching Shirley Temple classics such as “The Littlest Rebel” and “Curly Top” as a young child.

Temple started acting at the age of 3 and was a box-office hit by the age of 10, bringing in a salary of $50,000 per movie, which was not common then. Temple often beat out Clark Gable and Bing Crosby with box-office numbers. Temple retired from filmmaking at the age of 22 and married Charles Black.

Temple entered the spotlight again later on as a foreign diplomat. Temple served in the U.S. delegation to the United Nations from 1969 to 1974 was U.S. ambassador to Ghana from 1974 to 1976, and U.S. ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1989 to 1992. Anthony Amado’s Thoughts on Michael Sam’s Big News

Bergen County, NJ -02/10/2014

Michael Sam, a former defensive end for the University of Missouri recently came out. This wouldn’t be such a big deal but Sam is expected to be a high round draft pick in the NFL draft this May. Avid football fan Anthony Amado is very interested to see how this whole situation plays out, if Sam is drafted.

An openly out gay NFL player could mean big things not only for the sport of football but also for the entire sports word. An out NFL player like Sam could have the potential to help currently closeted NFL players less scared about coming out, it could help younger athletes know that being in the closet doesn’t need to happen.

“Michael has shown great courage in taking this step and not only do we support him, we are incredibly grateful. His decision to welcome us all into his world as he embarks upon a professional NFL career is an honorable one. This moment will resonate in a unique and important way for countless people, particularly LGBT youth,” said human rights activist Brendon Ayanbadejo, the former Baltimore Ravens player who has been advising Sam. Ayanbadejo is a member of the Athlete Ally Board of Directors, a group that fights homophobia in sports.

An out NFL player would mean a big challenge for both players and the NFL. The NFL already has non-discrimination policies in place. Fan Anthony Amado wants to think that the NFL would be an inclusive place, and while the organization might be, there is no telling what individual players might actually think or feel.

Anthony Amado’s Opinion on the Use of iPhones at the Sochi Games

Bergen County, NJ -02/07/2014

Yesterday news media was reporting that Samsung had asked Olympic athletes to cover up logos on competitor’s devices during the opening ceremonies, as Samsung is a major sponsor of the games and gifted all athletes a free Galaxy Note 3 smartphone in gift bags.  Apple fan Anthony Amado read this news yesterday and did not think it was fair of Samsung to require this of athletes, especially when the Samsung phones are a gift.

Today, an Olympic spokesperson said the reports were not true. Athletes are allowed to use any device during the opening ceremonies. “The Samsung Note 3 that were distributed are a gift to the athletes, so they can capture and share their experiences at the Games, and the phones also contain important competition and logistical information for competing athletes.” (Source- Macrumors).

Apple fans like Anthony Amado was glad to hear that athletes are allowed to use the popular iPhone during the games. However, it should be noted that Olympic athletes are banned from mentioning any non-sponsor products during the games, including on social media and clothing. It is possible that Samsung requested other logos be covered, but it is not a rule of the IOC and not something athletes would be punished for.

Anthony Amado’s Opinion of the Accommodations in Sochi

Bergen County, NJ -02/07/2014

There is a lot of media hype surrounding the conditions of the accommodations in Sochi, where the 2014 Olympics are set to kick off tonight with opening ceremonies. Anthony Amado has been following the news the past couple of days and heard the accounts of the supposed hotels not finished.

News media arriving in Sochi ahead of the start of the games were greeted by yellow water, missing doorknobs and signs saying not to flush toilet paper, but rather to throw it away. An entirely new “city” was built from the ground up in order to accommodate all of the athletes and visitors to the Russian city.

Russian officials have been denying the reports of incomplete hotels and accommodations. “We’ve put 100,000 guests in rooms and only gotten 103 registered complaints and every one of those is being taken care of,” he said. (It wasn’t clear what Mr. Kozak was counting as a registered complaint). (Source- CNN).

For those not at the games, the media’s portrayal of what the situation is like is all people have to go by. For New Jersey native Anthony Amado, is raises some questions as to why accommodations are lacking and what that means for other more serious parts of the games, like security.

Anthony Amado Weighs in on Justin Bieber Drama

Bergen County, NJ -02/06/2014

It seems like every day lately there is a news headline about “the Bieber”. Last month it was for driving without a license and reckless driving in Miami. Just Bieber was most recently in the news after the pilot of a chartered jet taking the musican and friends from Toronto to New Jersey asked Justin Bieber and Justin Bieber’s dad to stop smoking marijuana on the plane. The pilot said the entire cabin of the plane was hazy with smoke.

People across the country have submitted a petition seeking the deportation of the musician, back to Canada. New Jersey resident Anthony Amado doesn’t agree that Justin Bieber should be deported. But Amado does think that actor should be responsible for all of the charges that have been charged, just like anyone else would be.

Justin Bieber is also possibly facing charges of vandalism for supposedly throwing eggs at a neighbor’s house. Justin Bieber is not the first actor known for getting into trouble with the law repeatedly. But like Anthony Amado said, just because someone is a star, doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be punishments for the actions of those people.

Anthony Amado Expresses Opinion of Safety of the Sochi Games

Bergen County, NJ -02/05/2014

The Olympics are an exciting time. A historic event meant to bring together the top athletes from across the globe to compete in tests of strength, endurance and perseverance. However many US citizens, like New Jersey’s Anthony Amado have a different feeling about this year’s games in Sochi.

A recent CNN poll found that 57% of American’s believe there will be some sort of terror attack at or near the Sochi games this month. 51% of American’s were worried about a terrorist attack at the Atlanta games in 1996 and unfortunately that came true.

New Jersey resident Anthony Amado isn’t sure what to think about all of the media hype surrounding the games. Being from New Jersey, Anthony was a bit worried about an attack during the Super Bowl last week, especially after the media released polls stating that other American’s felt the same way, but luckily that didn’t happen.

Russian officials have assured everyone that the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure safety at the Sochi Games. Government officials have created a steel ring of “safety” surrounding the Olympic area, complete with armed guards, guns and other protective measures.

For Anthony Amado and other American’s worried about an attack, there isn’t much anyone can do but wait and hope for the best. President Obama has assured American’s that the US will also be supporting the Russians security teams.
